Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 10.5-ounce can condensed French onion soup
  • ½ cup dry bread crumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients: Gather all the ingredients before you start cooking.
  • Mix the Beef Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, 1/3 cup of the condensed soup, bread crumbs, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to incorporate all the ingredients evenly.
  • Shape the Patties: Form the mixture into 6 oval patties.
  • Cook the Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and brown them on both sides. Drain any excess fat from the skillet.
  • Make the Gravy: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining soup and flour until smooth. Stir in the ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard powder until fully combined.
  • Simmer the Patties: Pour the gravy mixture over the patties in the skillet. Cover the skillet and cook on low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure the sauce doesn’t stick.
  • Serve: Once the patties are fully cooked and the sauce has thickened, serve them warm. Enjoy your homemade Salisbury steak!

Notes

Meat Options: Ground beef with an 80/20 fat ratio works best for juicy and flavorful patties. You can also use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
Breadcrumbs Substitute: If you don’t have breadcrumbs, crushed crackers or panko work just as well.
Thicker Gravy: For a thicker gravy, add an extra teaspoon of flour or let the sauce simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes.
Add Veggies: Enhance the dish by adding sautéed mushrooms or onions to the gravy for extra flavor.
Make Ahead: The patties and gravy can be prepared ahead of time and reheated when ready to serve. The flavors only get better!
Serving Suggestions: Serve Salisbury steak with creamy mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, and a side of steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave until warmed through.
