Homemade Breadtwists

If you’re from Utah, you’re probably familiar with the amazing breadsticks from the Pizza Factory. Sometimes, I go there just for the breadsticks—they’re that good. I’m pretty sure this is the same recipe, and I can’t even describe how delicious these turned out. They were so irresistible, I was surprised I even managed to get a picture before we devoured them all!

For years, I was intimidated by the thought of making bread at home. It seemed too complicated and time-consuming. That’s why I was thrilled to find a bread recipe that takes less than an hour! If you’re also hesitant about making bread or think it’s too difficult, worry no more! I made mine using my KitchenAid mixer with a dough hook, and it was incredibly easy. The dough was so soft and easy to roll out! This dough can also be used for pizza crust. I made a second batch, and we’re having pizza tonight. Once you try this recipe, I’m sure it will become a staple in your weekly dinners, just like it is in mine!

Breadtwists Ingredients:

This short list of ingredients comes together quickly and easily to make the most unforgettable bread! In fact, you probably already have most of these items in your pantry or refrigerator:

  • Warm water: Should be between 105-115 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Sugar: Even savory bread twists need a touch of sweetness.
  • Yeast: Make sure your yeast is fresh and active.
  • Flour: All-purpose flour works perfectly for these bread twists.
  • Salt: Don’t use too much, as you’ll also be adding garlic salt to the outside.
  • Butter: Brush the butter over the bread before and after baking.
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese: Freshly grated is best, but prepackaged works too.
  • Garlic Salt: A must-have seasoning that enhances the flavor of everything!

How to Make Breadtwists :

After many years of being afraid to make homemade bread, I was amazed at how simple and rewarding it is! In less than 10 steps, I had warm, fresh bread straight from the oven. Don’t be afraid to try it too! It’s much quicker and easier than you might think.

  1. Make Starter: Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast together. Let it sit (or proof) for 5 minutes.
  2. Mix Dough: Add flour and salt to the water, sugar, and yeast mixture. Mix until smooth and let it rise for 10 minutes. I used my KitchenAid mixer with the dough hook, which made it super easy!
  3. Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, flatten the dough into a large square. Brush the dough with melted butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and garlic salt.
  4. Fold the Dough: Fold the dough in half. Cut it into one-inch strips. A pizza cutter works great for this!
  5. Form Twists: Twist the one-inch strips of dough and place them on a cookie sheet. Let them sit for another 10-15 minutes to rise.
  6. Bake: Bake the breadsticks at 400°F for 20 minutes or until golden brown. My oven took about 17 minutes for a light golden brown.
  7. Add Butter and Seasoning: Immediately after baking, brush with more garlic butter and sprinkle with garlic salt and grated Parmesan cheese.

Tips for the Best Homemade Breadtwists Ever!

Following these steps will result in the softest, most delicious warm bread! It’s especially helpful to read through the directions a couple of times before you begin, so you know what to expect. Here are a few key tips to pay close attention to:

  • Warm Milk: Ensure your milk is not too warm when you add the yeast, or it will kill the yeast. The milk should be between 105-115 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Yeast: Don’t skip the step of letting your yeast proof in the warm milk before moving on to the next step.
  • Keep It Moving: Turn your pan during baking to make sure the bread twists cook evenly.

Storing Homemade Breadtwists:

I’ve learned to make extra bread twists and freeze them until I’m ready to bake. To store uncooked dough, wrap it tightly or place it in an airtight container. Keep it in your refrigerator for up to 48 hours or in your freezer for up to 4 weeks. When you’re ready to bake, thaw the dough in the refrigerator overnight. Then, cover and let the dough rise, which will take longer due to being frozen—around 30 minutes. Follow the baking directions as usual. After baking, store leftover bread twists as follows:

  • Freezer: Bread will stay good in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Refrigerator: It’s best to avoid storing bread twists in the refrigerator as they will turn stale quickly.
  • Room Temperature: Store bread at room temperature for 3-4 days before it loses freshness.
  • Reheating Cooked Bread: Heat them in a 350°F oven for about 5 minutes or until warm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if bread dough is too wet?

Your dough can become sticky if you add too much water or use flour that isn’t suitable for the type of dough you are making. Over-proofing or over-fermenting the dough can also weaken the gluten structure, resulting in sticky dough.

What can I add to my homemade bread?

You can enhance your bread with herbs and seasonings like garlic, rosemary, dill, chopped onion, jalapeño, shredded cheese, chopped nuts, dried cranberries, and more. Even quick bread alternatives, like my no-yeast bread, can benefit from added flavors. Baker’s Tip: Be cautious not to add excessive flour while handling the dough.

What are Homemade Breadtwists made of?

Breadsticks typically consist of flour, water, yeast (or baking powder/soda for some variations), salt, and often feature additional ingredients like olive oil or butter for richness, along with seasonings such as garlic, herbs, or cheese to enhance flavor. Bakers roll the dough into thin sticks before baking to achieve their crispy texture.

What is the difference between bread sticks and bread?

Breadsticks are thin, crispy sticks often served as snacks or appetizers, known for their crunchy texture. Bread, on the other hand, comes in various forms like loaves or rolls, is softer, and serves as a staple for sandwiches and meals. Both use similar ingredients but differ in shape, texture, and typical usage.

  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Garlic salt

Instructions

  • Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until smooth and let it rise for 10 minutes. I used my KitchenAid mixer with the dough hook for easy preparation.
  • Roll out the dough into a large square on a floured surface. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and garlic salt.
  • Fold the dough in half and cut into one-inch strips using a pizza cutter.

  • Immediately after baking, brush with more garlic butter and sprinkle with garlic salt and grated Parmesan cheese. Serve with marinara sauce, Alfredo sauce, or ranch dressing.
  • This dough also makes excellent pizza dough. When I make this recipe, I halve it. Half of the dough is used for breadtwists and the other half for four personal-sized pizzas. If making one pizza or mini pizzas, oven temperature and cooking time remain the same.
